Mt. Vernon barn destroyed by recent fire

A fire on the property of Mr. Bart Rainey, located between Mt. Vernon and Woodlawn, resulted in the complete destruction of a 40-foot by 40-foot pole barn.

Upon arrival at the scene, located off East Casey Pike, firefighters from the Jefferson Fire Department discovered the barn fully engulfed in flames. The blaze unfortunately resulted in the total loss of the structure and its contents, which included a golf cart, a mower, and several four-wheelers.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time. It should be noted that this fire is not related to the recent fires that took place at various Mt. Vernon properties on Wednesday morning. Recently, Mt. Vernon has experienced various fires that have caused problems for the community. However, it is believed that they are not linked.

Firefighters from the Jefferson Fire Department responded to the initial call, received at 8:00 pm, and remained on the scene for approximately two and a half hours to extinguish the fire. They were assisted by personnel from the Mt. Vernon, Woodlawn, Kell, and Centralia Fire Protection Districts. Additionally, the Bluford and Waltonville fire departments provided standby support at the Jefferson Fire Station in case of another emergency.
