Public Transportation Disrupted in Mount Vernon, Illinois Due to Storm Damage

Mount Vernon, Illinois (March 15, 2024) – South Central Transit (SCT) announced the temporary suspension of all public transportation services within Jefferson County, effective immediately. This decision follows significant damage sustained at two of SCT’s facilities in Mount Vernon during severe storms that swept through the area on Thursday, March 14th.

Initial assessments indicate that a building housing 25 SCT buses sustained major roof damage. Another facility used for SCT’s Mount Vernon offices was also impacted. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

SCT personnel promptly evaluated the situation on Thursday evening and determined service suspension was necessary. As SCT does not operate on weekends, this timeframe will allow for a comprehensive damage assessment and the development of a plan for service resumption.

SCT typically offers 19 daily routes throughout Jefferson County. Passengers are encouraged to seek the latest service updates via the SCT website, Facebook page, and Instagram account.

This disruption impacts service within Jefferson County only. SCT continues to provide regular transportation services in Franklin, Perry, Marion, Clinton, and Washington Counties.
