Mt. Vernon resident faces trespassing charges

Recently, law enforcement officials responded to a report of trespassing in progress in the 11000 block of E. Stone Road in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Upon arrival, deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Mt. Vernon Police Department observed that the suspect, 44-year-old Dewayne E. Corbett of Mt. Vernon, was still on the scene.

Further investigation revealed that Corbett had attempted to forcibly enter a residence after causing damage to the exterior of the home. In response to this threat, one of the victims discharged a handgun, resulting in minor injuries to Corbett, which he refused medical treatment for.

Corbett was subsequently arrested and charged with felony trespassing. It was also discovered that he had attempted to enter at least two other residences prior to the incident on E. Stone Rd. He was transported to the Jefferson County Justice Center to await his pretrial detention hearing.

This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities. It also underscores the potential dangers faced by homeowners and the need for effective self-defense measures.
