Mt. Vernon City Council discusses street closures & food tax

The Mt. Vernon City Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting this evening, Wednesday, March 6th, 2024, commencing at 7:00 PM in the Council Chambers of City Hall, situated at 1100 Main Street.

Agenda Items:

  • Street Closure Request: The Council will consider a request to authorize the closure of North Street between 10th Street and 11th Street on April 27th, 2024, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, to facilitate Central Church Serve Day activities.
  • Food Tax Resolution: The Council will deliberate on a resolution aimed at preserving revenue generated through the food tax. This action comes in response to Governor JB Pritzker’s proposal to permanently eliminate the sales tax on groceries. While the Governor previously suspended this tax as part of his 2022 budget, the state reimbursed municipalities for the lost revenue during the pandemic. Under the Governor’s current proposal, such reimbursement would cease, raising concerns among some individuals regarding how municipalities would compensate for this potential loss of revenue.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting and participate in the discussions concerning these and other agenda items.
