PORTLAND, Oregon – This week, REI Co-op announced that it would be permanently closing its Portland store next month. This move was mentioned on a sign left on the venue’s front window which confirmed its final day of operation would conclude on February 1 at 7 PM.
Here, the sign read: ‘REI Portland is closing. We’re permanently closing our doors on February 1 at 7 PM.’ This was accompanied by the locations of its nearest stores, such as those located in Clackamas, Hillsboro, and Tigard. Unfortunately for Portland shoppers, this leaves a very large retail space that may not be filled immediately as the area continues to struggle with the combative retail climate.
The aforementioned photo was taken by a passerby who subsequently uploaded the image to Reddit. Here, users expressed their sadness that the store was closing. Although this news is still recent, it comes after strong rumors that the store would be closing which circulated throughout 2023 and were apparently based on store break-ins and an issue with the landlord.
REI Co-op has been selling high-quality outdoor gear and sporting goods since its founding in 1938. Originally started by a group of 23 climbing enthusiasts, REI has grown to become one of the largest outdoor retailers in the United States, with over 170 locations across the country and a thriving online store.
