At an Islamic school in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, “two teenagers have been charged with 23 counts of murder” (Cnn.com). The school was set on fire, killing 21 children and 2 adults.

The two sixteen-year-old suspects have not entered a plea. In Malaysia, “a murder charge carries an automatic death sentence” (Cnn.com). In cases involving juveniles, the maximum sentence is prison. The boys were also charged with a “Drug-related offenses” (Cnn.com) along with four other boys. One of the boys was released without a charge due to “the lack of evidence” (Cnn.com).

Firefighters rushed to the school, where the “blaze was put out within an hour” (Theguardian.com). In the sleeping quarters of the school were “ash-covered, fire-blanked beds” (Theguardian.com). Fire officials stated that the fire could have been caused by an “electrical short circuit or a mosquito-repelling device” (Theguardian.com).

Some officials said that the school was operating without the correct license. The deputy prime minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, stated that they have “launched an investigation” (Theguardian.com) regarding the schools incorrect license.

There was a full-scale investigation launched on all religious schools in Malaysia after the fire. There are “402 registered religious schools in the state of Selangor” (Cnn.com). Many of those schools had “faulty wiring and no fire extinguishers” (Cnn.com) said by Azmi Osman, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director.
