On Friday, April 7, Neil Gorsuch was confirmed as a United States Supreme Court justice. He was sworn in on Monday, April 10. Gorsuch is the 113th judge to serve on the United States Supreme Court.

Gorsuch is a replacement to Antonin Scalia, a Supreme Court justice who died February of 2016. Gorsuch is widely considered similar to Scalia, both being what are termed “constitutional originalists.” Constitutional originalists are people who view the Constitution as having a fixed meaning, with that being based on what people would have understood it to be at the time of its enactment. It is expected that Gorsuch’s legal opinions will be similar to those of Scalia.

Gorsuch’s appointment comes after a long, bitter fight in the United States Senate. After Scalia died, (then-current) President Obama attempted to fill his seat, but was blocked by Senate Republicans.

Senate Democrats, upon the announcement of Gorsuch’s nomination, filibustered the hearings, feeling that Gorsuch was unfit to serve. After a lengthy battle, Republicans invoked what they called the “nuclear option,” lowering the confirmation threshold from 60 votes to a simple majority. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), who voted in favor of the rules change, later said that it was a mistake and that both parties would “rue the day” it was used.

“It seems unfair,” said Michael Wilson, a mathematics major at Kishwaukee College. “Changing the rules for such a self-serving purpose isn’t a good look. And in this case, it means that the GOP has a monopoly on federal power.”
