In a move that shocked most of the soccer world on Monday night. The Chicago Fire signed midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger to a one-year contract, with an option of a second-year onward, for a reported 4.7 million U.S. Dollars.

Schweinsteiger, 32, played most notably for the German Club Bayern Munich, though his most recent club was with the English Manchester United.

Bastian didn’t see much playing time under Manchester’s coach, Jose “The Special One” Mourinho. Having only played 18 matches in the previous season with Manchester.

Nelson Rodriguez, General Manager of the Chicago Fire, came out and made a statement with the press on Monday.

“We’re adding someone who has won at every level, including the very highest levels, and has done so in a way that is consistent with our values,” said Nelson, while also going on to say that the “club will now be forced to hold ourselves to a higher standard […]”

Bastian could be ready to play as early as next Wednesday, just before the April 1st home match against the Montreal Impact. Assuming his visa and a physical go well.

Bastian also made a comment, thinking his fans in Manchester for their support and wishing them a great season.

With the addition of Schweinsteiger, the midfield is looking to be our strongest area. It’s my speculation the club will play a 4-3-3 formation with a diamond midfield.

With Bastian up top in the midfield and with Dax McCarty and Juninho in the back of the midfield, the Chicago Fire could have a devastating attack.

Bastian has proven to be successful over his career, having won trophies with Bayern Munich, and Manchester United during his career, as well as winning the World Cup, in 2014 in his international career.

The addition of Bastian will make for some good football if he can be that playmaker, although, if needed, he can play a more defensive role.
