With a new year comes new movies! There are loads of movies set to release this year and below are 20 of the top picks. If you don’t have time to make it to the theatre, keep an eye out for the DVD release.

Bad Boys For Life

Bad Boys For Life is in theatres now and is starring Will Smith, Martin Lawerance and Vanessa Hudgens. This is the third movie in the ‘Bad Boys’ series however it is not the last. There is a fourth Bad Boys movie in the works, but not much is known. In this movie, Mike and Marcus team up with the Miami police department to go against Armando Armas.

Dolittle is also in theatres now and stars many big names including Robert Downey Jr., Antonio Banderas, and Michael Sheen. There have been many remakes of ‘Dr. Dolittle’ but there are high hopes for this one. In this version, Dr. John Dolittle has the unique ability to talk to animals. When Queen Victoria falls ill, Dolittle and his friends go on an adventure to find the cure hidden on a mythical island.

Underwater is currently playing in theatres as well. It’s starring Kristen Stewart, Jessica Henwick, and T.J. Miller. While a team of aquatic researchers are at work, something happens to their submarine and water comes crashing in. The captain, Norah, and the rest who survived realize they need to walk on the ocean floor to return to the main facility. This proves to be an even more challenging walk as they become faced with creatures no one has ever seen.

The Turning

The Turning is another movie playing in theatres and stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, and Brooklynn Prince. This movie is a modern take on Henry James’ novella  The Turn of the Screw. In this horror movie, a terrible event takes place when two young children, Miles and Flora, witness the death of their parts. Kate Mandells moves into their mansion to become a private tutor for the children but begins to notice unexplainable occurrences happening around her.

Like A Boss

Like A Boss came out January 10, 2020, and starred Rose Byrne, Tiffany Haddish, and Salma Hayek. Mia and Mel, life-long best friends, start their own cosmetics company from scratch but end up in financial troubles. When an offer comes to buyout their company, everything seemed great. However, Mia and Mel’s friendship get put to the test when things suddenly take a turn for the worse.

Ironbark hit theatres January 24, 2020. It stars Rachel Brosnahan, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jessie Buckley. During the Cold War, Wynne and Oleg Penkovsky (Ironbark) worked together to help get intelligence that put an end to the Cuban Missile Crisis. This true story is one to look for when it comes out on DVD.

A Fall From Grace

A Fall From Grace was in theatres January 17, 2020. It starred Crystal Fox, Phylicia Rashad, and Bresha Webb. When a woman is accused of murdering her husband, she gets a lawyer and takes it to court. She agrees to the plea deal, as long as the prison is close to her son however her lawyer thinks there is more beneath the surface and begins to uncover the truth.

Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island

Fantasy Island is set to come out  February 14, 2020, and stars Maggie Q, Lucy Hale, and Portia Doubleday. For those staying at the wondrous yet remote resort, things seem to be going well. Mr. Roarke makes their dreams come true but they soon turn into their nightmares. The guests most solve the mystery if they want to make it out alive.

Sonic the Hedgehog

With social media now-a-days, it was hard to miss the huge debate on the design for Sonic the Hedgehog. Things got to the point where the movie was pulled and sonic was redrawn. Now, it will be in theatre February 14, 2020. Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, and James Marsden will be starring in this film. When an evil genius was to catch a blue, super-fast hedgehog (Sonic), a small-town police officer teams up with Sonic to defeat the genius.

Onward is set to release March 6, 2020. It stars some big names, including Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Two elf brothers go on a road trip to find out if there is still some magic out there so they can spend one more day with their father. Their father died when they were both too young to have clear memories of him.

This is the live-action version of the Disney classic Mulan, however it will have no singing like the animated version did. It is set to release March 17, 2020, and stars Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, and Jet Li. In case you are unfamiliar with the plot of Mulan, a Chinese maiden pretends to be a male warrior to take the place of her father. This Mulan will not include the songs to be respectful towards the Chinese culture.

The Lovebirds

The Lovebirds is set to release April 3, 2020, and will star Isaa Rae, Kumail Nanjiani, and Anna Camp. Jibran and Leilani’s relationship is starting to get a little rocky as the couple got closer to breaking up. In a twist of events, they accidently  become involved with a murder mystery were they are the ones believed to have caused the murder. Now on the run from the cops, these two need to figure out how to clear their names and save themselves.

Monster Problems

Monster Problems will be in theatres April 17, 2020, six weeks after its original release date. This was due to the production team deciding it would be a more successful opening farther into summer. The movie stars Jessica Henwick, Michael Rooker, and Dylan O’Brien. Monster Problems follows a teenager as he battles monsters while trying to find the girl he is in love with.

Black Widow

Black Widow is set to release May 1, 2020, and stars Scarlett Johnasson, Florence Pugh, and Rachel Weisz. Everyone knows who Black Widow is either from the comics or from Iron Man 2, however she is now finally getting her solo movies. During a panel, Marvel discussed what the Black Widow would be about, however nothing is confirmed just yet. We are to believe there is a part of her origin story and we know she meets up with her sister. We also know they go back to where they began and face their past.

Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984 is expected to be released June 5, 2020. It stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, and Pedro Pascal. Not much is known about this film yet but we do get a trailer to fill us in with some hints. One thing is for certain: Steve Trevor is just as dorky as the last film.

Free Guy

Free Guy will be in theatres July 3, 2020, and will star Ryan Reynolds, Taika Waititi, and Jodie Comer. Ryan plays a guy named, Guy, who is just an average bank teller. Almost every day the bank gets robbed and Guy plays along until one day he snaps. He soon discovers he’s in an open world video game that is soon to be offline. Guy has to navigate this world after living as a NPC his whole life, before it’s too late.

Morbius will be in theatres July 31, 2020. It will star Adria Arjona, Jared Leto, and Jared Harris. A biochemist, Michael Morbius, is trying to cure a rare blood disease that he has. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work and he ends up injecting himself with a form of vampirism. This is a very different role for Jared Leto as the actor plays the Joker in Suicide Squad. This movie is one to add to the bucket list.

Insidious: The Dark Realm

For all my horror fans, the fifth movie in the Insidious series will arrive October 6, 2020,  just in time for Halloween. It will star Ava Kolker, Tom Fitzpatrick, and Dannay Rodriguez. The movie has a demonic entity that tries to release chaos into our world.

No Date Yet:

The Prom

The Prom does not have a release date but it is expected this year. This new musical is set to star Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, and Kerry Washington, along with other big names. For those who haven’t heard this musically before, the story falls a couple of actors who get laughed off broadway. They team up with two other failed actors and travel to Indiana to help a shy girl take the girl of her dreams to prom. While there isn’t a trailer just yet, you can watch the broadway performers talk about their show.

Marry Me

Marry Me is currently in post-production and has not been given a release date just yet. We do know the movie will have Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, and Sarah Silverman in it. The movie follows a pop star who is abandoned at the altar by her rock-star fiance just before the wedding. Instead she pulls a random guy from the crowd and marries him instead.
