The Chicago Blackhawks lose to the Nashville Predators 4-1, to give Nashville the decisive 4-0 sweep against the Hawks.

It’s a painful time to be a Blackhawks fan; the Chicago Blackhawks has provided the Nashville Predators with the franchise’s first ever sweep in a playoff series. Chicago has now bowed out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the first round for two years in a row.

The game started with a scoreless first period, the deadlock was broken just 9 minutes 41 seconds into the second period by Nashville defenseman Roman Josi. The third period saw three goals from Nashville, one of them an empty net goal, and a goal from Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews.

Chicago goalkeeper Corey Crawford made 22 saves on 25 shot attempts for a .880 save percentage, and Nashville God Pekka Rinne made 30 saves out of 31 shot attempts for a .968 save percentage (Stats from The Score).

The Blackhawks took a total of 126 shots on goaltender Pekka Rinne throughout the four game series, only seeing 3 of them go in. Corey Crawford saw 123 shots come his way throughout the four games, allowing 12 to go in out of 13 goals scored against the Hawks (empty net goal).

So where did it go wrong? Well it’s easy to blame the goalie for allowing so many goals, but Corey Crawford had an overall save percentage of .902 which is comparable to his regular season save percentage of .918.

What the Hawks did wrong was they gave up too many penalties. The Blackhawks play best when it’s 5v5, and there seemed to be someone in the box for about half the game. Going into the playoffs the Blackhawks also let the foot off the gas pedal, which the Blackhawks never seemed to recover from.

The Nashville Predators will play the Minnesota Wild in round two. The Chicago Blackhawks will play on the golf course until October when the next season starts.
